where should educators draw the line with ai?

I worked with a team of two students to assist Dr. Ope Dele-Ajayi with a new research project regarding AI in education. Our goal was to design and create a way to start the conversation with educators.

Process

This project was divided into three parts to understand the current landscape of AI in education, use the research to inform our scenario cards, and create a persona researchers could use to understand educators.

1. Understand the current technologies used in classrooms.

Taxonomy We went through the research articles Dr. Dele-Ajayi's team compiled and organized them into categories for scenario cards. After multiple iterations, we grouped the articles into 8 families:

  • Grading & Feedback

  • Lesson Planning

  • Quiz & Test Design

  • Student Progress Monitoring

  • Attendance & Admin

  • Parent & Guardian Communication

  • Student Wellbeing and Behavior

  • Academic Integrity Checking

AI Audit I explored various AI tools currently used in classrooms and analyzed what they do and how they are used.

2. Design scenario cards based on these technologies.

Low Fidelity Scenario Cards We created scenario cards for the 8 families listed above. In each category, we had three scenarios for Human in the Loop, Human on the Loop, and Human out of the Loop. These scenario cards will be used in educator interviews.

3. Create a user persona to help researchers understand educators.

User Persona We developed a user persona, Jamie, an educator trying to figure out how to best use AI in the classroom. The persona was designed to give researchers an idea about educators needs, wants, motivations, and current frustrations.

Journey Map We created a journey map to ideate how educators may interact with and use AI in the classroom.

The result was the taxonomy, user persona, journey map, and scenario cards to start the conversations with educators and give researchers insights into the user group.

Takeaways

I enjoyed my time in Newcastle, where I learned about English values and how to design within a different cultural context. I wish I had more time to work on this project, as I enjoyed the research aspect and am interested to see where it goes in the future.
